Algemeen
Een buis is een element met meestal cirkelvormige doorsnede, bestemd voor de afstroming van een vloeistof, gas of poedervormige vaste stof, al dan niet onder druk, en eventueel door middel van de zwaartekracht. De buis kan soepel of hard zijn, en maakt meestal deel uit van een leidingnet. Voorbeelden zijn de watervoorziening (leidingwater, regenwater, grijs water), energiedistributie (water/stoom voor verwarming of koeling), branddistributie, riolering (afvoerbuis voor hemelwater, afvalwater, ondergrondse riolering, drainage…), distributienetwerk voor brandstof (olie, gas…), centraal stofzuigsysteem, fontein en sprinkler…
